Review: Saint Anything

Saint Anything Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was fantastic. It is about a girl named Sydney. She is a teenage girl going through some tough times. Her older brother Peyton had gotten trouble many times, the most recent sending him behind bars. He had gotten into a car accident by hitting a boy who was biking. Sydney feels like her parents think Peyton is innocent. She decides to transfer to Jackson High School, and meets some new friends. But her mom doesn't like those friends. Follow Sidney while she battles what is right and what is wrong.
This book was a great read. It also had many interesting factors. Jackson school had been mentioned in Lock and Key by the same author, and another character was first mentioned in another of Sarah Dessen books. I also liked the characters in this book. Sydney's family was a dysfunction semi-normal family. Layla is Sydney's friend, and Layla's family is different. She has an older sister who used to figure skate, but got hooked on drugs after an injury. Her older brother is a guy who Sydney has a crush on, and ends up dating. The best character in that family is Layla's mom. She has MS, but is still a sweet and caring lady. She helps Sydney out in a few difficult situations. I liked how Sydney was often fighting with her parents. Teenagers aren't perfect, and she was a perfect example. She disagreed, she disobeyed, and she got mad at her parents often. I liked getting to meet Peyton during the book. He wasn't a bad kid, just a nice kid who had made some bad choices. He was actually really nice once Sydney got to know him.
The restaurant Layla's parents owned had a big part in this story. It was where Sydney and Layla had met, it was where they often hung out, and it was where Sydney eventually got a job. It was really well formed and added to the story.
The romance in the story was good. It wasn't a perfect love story, but it was a sweet addition to the story. Mac and Sydney were so cute together.

Overall, this is a sweet book with some great messages.
