Review: What Happens Now

What Happens Now

What Happens Now by Jennifer Castle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What Happen Now is a cute and surprisingly dark YA contemporary that will make you feel so many emotions at once.

Summery from Goodreads:
"I know what it is to want something so badly, you feel like your cells aren’t properly bonded together without it.
I also know what it’s like to get that something.
And honestly, I’m still not sure which is worse..."

Ari Logan is battling to win her war against depression and the dark night she hurt herself on purpose. It’s not easy: her best friend is drifting away, her mom’s emotionally checked out, and she spends her days playing caregiver to her handful of a half-sister, Danielle. But it’s summer, and anything is possible...
That’s when Camden Armstrong steps onto the beach of Ari’s local swimming lake.
At first, Ari quietly longs for Camden from afar, seeing in him everything she wants to be. When the two discover a true connection the following summer, Ari lets herself fall not just for the quirky and self-assured Camden but also his friends, tumbling into their world of independence, adventure, and shared sci-fi fandom. As Ari’s romantic dreams come true, she must unlock the mysteries of the very real and troubled boy behind her infatuation, while also struggling with her own demons, obligations, and loyalties

I really enjoyed this book. I received it as an ARC (my first hard copy ARC) and was very excited to read it. Just like many other people say, this is not the book they thought it was going to be. It is a romance with surprisingly dark undertones.

I enjoyed how this book talked about depression. It used a creative and pretty honest way to depict it and what others think of it. Ari's mom even refuses to call depression by it's name at the beginning of the book.

Ari was a character battling depression. She was a member of the Silver Arrow (I'll get to that later, I promise!) fandom, and life wasn't going real smooth for her. The biggest consolation in her changing life was a boy named Camden who she barely even knew. As she worked up the courage to talk to him, she becomes a more self confident and assured person.
Camden... Camden was a sweet character. He was always there for Ari, and helped her be stronger, and also break out of her comfort zone.

Silver Arrow was a big part of this book. It was a classic TV sci fi show that Ari loved. When she meets Camden, the show is the only thing they really have in common. I enjoyed how Jennifer Castle wove the show into the story.
However, the characters got a little too into Silver Arrow at the end. They were role playing as Silver Arrow characters, and thought that was who they were supposed to be, because they liked those characters.

Despite being a darker story, this book has a lot of humor in it. For example, Ari meets Camden when she accidentally walks into the boys bathroom at the beach. There are other humorous moments, conversations, and thoughts that make this book more enjoyable.

Overall, this is a good book about depression.

This is my first ever book playlist, so bear with me.

This song really shows the main aspect and mood of the book.  It talks about depression.  It is one of my favorite songs, and I think it fits the book really well.

This song pretty much describes the whole main timeframe of this book.  It takes place in SUMMER.

Safe & Sound pretty much describes how Ari feels around Camden.  Plus, the tune is kind of hauntingly beautiful like the book.

This is how Camden and Ari fell in love.  So sweet, right?
I think this fits the bill, right?  I don't know why, but the title says it all.

Here is the writing playlist that Jennifer Castle made for What Happens Now.
She said, "I "collected" these songs during the time I was writing What Happens Now. Each one of them inspired me or evoked the characters and story in some way. "

That playlist was surprisingly fun to make!  Comment below and tell me what you think about the book or playlist, or which songs you would add!
